2009 Show – ‘Premiere’

It’s Good to Dance

Theatre Review by Janice Taylor

The title of their show at the Waterside Theatre, Holbury, may have been “Premiere”, but the students of Dancewise Studios certainly didn’t look as if this was their first foray on to the stage as they danced their way through a packed programme that would have been a cinema buff’s dream. Performing to theme tunes and songs from films as diverse as Pulp Fiction and Pinocchio, Slumdog Millionaire and Cinderella, the cast ranging from Baby Ballet to adult professionals mesmerised their audience from curtain up to finale.

With smiles and style, these enthusiastic dancers showcased their accomplishments in a fast moving, highly energetic and colourful romp through cinema-land. They performed with poise, presence and panache to a delighted and appreciative audience. The tiny tots put the inevitable aah! factor into the show, while the incredible Irish dancers added that extra special wow! factor. The graceful ballet sequences contrasted beautifully with the strident attitude of the Boys Class: there were displays of ultimate energy from the jazz dancers and Impulse Dance Company, alongside the great presentation from the Adult Tap class. Solo performers in all disciplines showed the extremely high standard to which these dancers are taught, and the group routines demonstrated the caring, sharing attitude they have developed with older or more stage-wise dancers encouraging and guiding the younger and less experienced.

The high volume, high energy, full cast finale, complete with amazing aerobatics both on and off stage, brought the whole show to a glorious crescendo that had the audience cheering and applauding long and loud.
