Meet Jess!

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

She came along to last years’ DVD Premiere….and this is what she had to say about it:

“The best thing about the DVD Premiere is the excitement of having people around you who feel the same as you watching the DVD.

It felt nervously amazing!  And also professional.”

If you’re thinking about coming along to the Premiere this year, Jess has this message for you:

“Have pride in yourself while watching yourself dance with the most amazing people! Because it isn’t selfish to be proud of a passion. “

Sound good?!

Last day

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Today is my last day of work experience, I have had a really great time working with the Dancewise Studios team! They have set me many tasks that before these two weeks I had never done before like accounting or washing lots of costumes. So I am pleased that I will walk away from this experience with some brand new skills for the future. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the day will bring, and of course it won’t be a goodbye because I am a student at Dancewise as well as being on work experience.

Second week

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Yesterday, we sorted out all the costumes. We firstly went through and sorted them out into piles of each dance, then we checked off which costumes had and hadn’t been handed in. Once all this was done we started washing and hanging them up, we had to febreze the ones that couldn’t go into the washing machine. Whilst the costumes where being washed me and Thom started adding Dancewise  on advertising websites.

second week!

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Over the weekend, dancewise had their annual show, it went really well and everyone looked stunning. We held it at The Nuffield Theatre this year which we haven’t done before, it was really nice there, the only thing we struggled with was that the stage was a lot wider than we had been practising with but everyone got used to it by the technical rehearsal. I am pleased to say that I won two trophy’s along with lots of other dancers who won several awards. I am sure that this week will include lots of washing costumes and sorting things out but I look forward to it as it’s a new challenge and new experience.

Day 3/4!

Friday, July 8th, 2011

The past few days has been really good, I have been helping out with a lot of the show preparations, like typing out a running order with quick changes on for room aunties, I burnt the show CD’s and had to listen to them to make sure everything was playing smoothly. I also made some name tags for members of staff back stage and front of house. I have done some accounting which was interesting as I’ve never done it before. Yesterday I went to a networking meeting, and got to see what different businesses dancewise are associated with. Sunday is the show and i’m very excited about that, but there will be lots of important jobs for me to do so that everything goes to plan

Show Prep!

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Casey is working on a list of quick changes and I’m working on the checklist of things to take to the theatre – it’s all go go go and very exciting!

Day Two!

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Yesterday I had jobs that I had never done before, and I loved the challenge of having to work out how to do them. I firstly had to imagine I had never danced before, and was looking for a dance school to go to, so I typed into the search engine the sorts of things I would think people would type and I had to write down the different websites that came up so that dancewise could later add themselves to it, so they get loads of people seeing what they do. Then I had a really good time doing some advertising, I helped write emails to radio stations and set up the event for “Live the Dream” on various news websites, i really enjoyed it!

Nuffield Directions – Avoid going through town on Sunday!

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Race for Life is on the same day as the show and a lot of the roads around the Nuffield will be closed. We strongly advise you to take the motorway route (directions below) and allow plenty of extra time for your journey – especially on your way to the rehearsal.

http://www.theaa.com/route-planner/print-preview/index.jsp?f=298260055189002%7CSO45+2QG%2C+Holbury%7CSTREET%7C442966%7C103917&t=298260060313293%7CBurgess+Road%2C+Southampton%7CSTREET%7C443171%7C115639&v0=298260060450872%7CM271+Junction+1+Northbound%2C+Hampshire%7CSTREET%7C437213%7C114281&v1&v2&v3&db=B

The route above takes you to Burgess Road – from there take a left into University Road and then the first right into the car parks for the Nuffield Theatre.

First day!

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Yesterday was my first day of work experience, I enjoyed it a lot! First I sorted through the trophies and marked off which ones had and hadn’t been handed in. Then I added some email addresses onto their system, where they send out news letters and things. Next I helped Jan out with a return, then typed up the list of prizes for the raffle. When the dance lessons started I took the register for each of the classes, but that was the only different thing I did that day, because I am there all evening Monday for dance anyway. I look forward to what i will do next!

Stage Presence! What is it and how can I get it?

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

You know it when you see it. Some call it star quality – what is it, how important is it, and can it be trained?

Here are some quotes and opinions about stage presence – we’d love you to post your comments and what stage presence means to you!

“Stage presence is dancing in a relaxed manner from your heart. It’s when you transform yourself and the audience says, ‘wow, that’s amazing’.”

“I think most people would believe that it is a smile or a personality on a stage, but to me, stage presence is being able to express an emotion that is felt by the audience.”

“If you don’t have stage presence, people won’t think there’s anything to watch.”

“You have to tell me a story. Why are you walking there? If you’re walking for no reason, I’m going to get popcorn. You must tell me a story. I want you to tell me what you are feeling.”

“It’s important because the audience wants to be entertained. It’s important because you learn to show why you dance. Open your heart – it’s a 200% commitment.”

“There are some people who are just born with it. Many others train. Dancers get better with time.”

“I think it is a case of overcoming inhibitions and the ability to let it go and not be intimidated to share who and what you are with the audience.”

“There are people you don’t notice in the studio who then get into the stage lights and there it is!”

“I’ve been teaching over 30 years and maybe ten or so people I know have natural stage presence. Stage presence must be taught.”

“My school offers musical theatre and acting classes/coaching in addition to dance technique classes. I’ve found that these classes really help develop stage presence. Another way we are teaching stage presence is by having the students of every age perform for their peers during class time. As a teacher I ask the students how they feel about particular movements to help them make human and mental connections to what they are doing.”

“I think it comes with performing. It’s about explaining to your dancer what the story is about, what they are supposed to portray; really giving them the information they need to express the story. Sometimes dancers do not know what the choreographer is trying to express. The dancer needs to be fully aware of the choreographer’s intention.”

“Watch other dancers – go to see professional productions and see how other people perform. Why are those dancers in that great company?”

“I have seen some beautiful dancers whose performances didn’t cross the footlights. Dancers must invest in both stage presence and technique.”

“I’d definitely go with a medium level dancer with stage presence rather than a technician. My responsibility is to entertain and move the audience. Give me a dancer with energy, life, and passion. I think stage presence is the key to success as a performer, as a teacher and as a choreographer. Stage presence is present whether you are on the stage or not.”

“I would hire the dancer with tremendous stage presence and work on the technique.”
